Pierce County Fire District #18 Board of Commissioners will hold a special meeting on September 16, 2009 at 7 pm at the Multi Purpose Center (202 Washington Ave S). The purpose of the meeting will be to review a presentation from Graham Fire & Rescue for a possible administrative services agreement with Pierce County Fire District #18. The City of Orting Council will also be in attendance.
What is the opinion you want your elected representive from the city council or from the PFD 18 fire commissioners to hear loud and clear from you as a voter?
If you are not a voting citizen in one of these groups, could you please at least identify yourself as ‘out of area opinion’. If you are a firefighter or related to a firefighter could you please identify yourself as ‘FF’. By doing so, it will help the officials sort out the opinions and comments.

I think this is a good avenue to pursue, but the city must have a strong say so and presence in all future decisions. We cannot have a repeat of what has happened in the past few months.

What exactly are we supposed to comment on? The City has been championing the Graham Fire and Rescue for months now, yet they have not provided any information on the agency’s vital statistics which would justify their supporting Graham… other than the fact that Graham isn’t East Pierce. How much is this going to cost us? Why exactly is this a better fit for our city? How many full time staff work for Graham? How many volunteers? What type of equipment do they possess? How many medics? What is their average response time to medical calls? Fire calls? Why would the city want our opinions on a subject matter that we know absolutely nothing about? It’s like asking a person who was born and raised in Kansas and has never left the state to describe what the beaches of Hawaii are like. Why not wait until after the 16th to post this one?

Adter reading Barbara’s article, which I commend her for writing up more than I would have at such a boring meeting, however, I think she missed the facial reactions of the meeting. I don’t think that it went as well as she’s leading us to believe. Even the mayor had some frowns on her face.
Personally as a operating organization, I felt they were a little top heavy with bosses, but maybe that was in preparation for annexation, Or maybe I don’t understant the fire departments well enough. Maybe I need to be the learner.
I also felt that the presentation about Graham Fire District had more to do with everyones family than about the department itself. the only person that spoke up about the department didn’t have that much good to say. To bad it wasn’t video recorded.

I LOVE this town, but it’s time for change. It’s time to elect new leadership that doesn’t insert foot into mouth very time they open their mouth. Its time to let go of the past and look for a way to continue to provide a high level of public safety in this town. I’m sick and tired of seeing GROWN adults act like children. I don’t care if no one said hi to you George. I don’t care if you didn’t have a say in what happened to the old Chief (Mayor Temple). Really this is how you run a town? The city made a decision to give up control of there fire department for a reason. Lets face the facts the city of Orting has no business being in the fire service anymore. It just can’t afford too on its own . At least not to a level that I expect as a tax payer in the town. Both sides City and District need to grow up and quite acting like children. I believe that it would be better to find a third party to run the Fire Department. If that means East Pierce Fire or Graham Fire who cares. They both present a better option than wants is going on right now.
