We came home to Orting the afternoon of July 5th to find many of the streets in town covered with the debri and liter of an obvious mix of illegal and legal fireworks. OK, the city code obviously didn’t get enforced fully over the weekend. How about writing some tickets now for illegal garbage disposed in the streets outside receptacles, or for illegal outdoor burning without a permit, or defacing properties. Without some enforced boundries, there are no boundries. I know it’s possible for a community to have a great celebration without all this violation of codes. After spending a delightful holiday weekend in a small town that only allows the community fireworks, has a wonderful parade with great participation and sold glow sticks, bubbles, etc as an alternative to fireworks for the kids. It was a blast, with a community band playing in the background. All for FREE, no charge for parking even! Money was made off of food sales, vendor market, raffle tickets and the chamber sponsored the event. Their police force is smaller than Orting’s and both they and the local fire and rescue were fully present. It was safe, sane and clean afterwards. We’d love to see this change in our hometown, with the big display out at Lion’s field being the place for EVERYONE that wants big booms and incredible fireworks to go. With free parking available somewhere out there please.

What the Town of Orting needs is a new administration willing to direct the police department to enforce the laws. Lets start with a new mayor, chief of police, and several city council members.
