Change In School Leadership Good

June 22, 2009 · 1 Comment

Welcome Michele Curry. We’re looking forward to the improvements you’ll be bringing to our student’s education in Orting. We hope the time of focusing on building new school facilities and remodeling is no longer the top priority under your leadership.  It’s time to get back to the basics and make sure our children are getting the best possible education available. It has been sad to have Orting parents taking  their kids to school districts nearby because they were disatisfied with the quality of education their children were getting here. It’s time to focus on learning, solid core curriculum, great staff. We’re looking forward to seeing the changes and hearing about it from you. We hope you keep the public informed with regular updates submitted to Orting News.

Change is only good when it’s for the better. I can only hope that Michelle Curry is for the better–though you couldn’t get much worse. I’m flabbergasted at the state of the Orting school system. I drive by the construction site for the new stadium while thinking that the money might better have been spent on new textbooks to replace those that are so dreadfully out-of-date or non-existent. Or perhaps, investment in new computers –thinking of the paper my daughter was required to turn in via email as the computer her teacher was using was so out-dated that it wouldn’t read the CD-ROM disk her paper was saved to. The schools have new wiring for the 21st century, yet the computers are more akin to PC Recycle than anything state-of-the-art.

I can’t help but believe that the school improvements were made to pad a school board member or superintendent’s legacy than to prepare the students of Orting for their future. I dare not delve into the records of the other school administrators that are so evidently beyond reproach by the school board.

If the Orting School Board and Administration could get over their internal politics and begin making decisions to improve the quality of our children’s education rather than the quality of their resumes, it would be a great day for the children of Orting.
